Strategic hilltop fortress. Long-form companion to the Norman Expansion pin (England).
Lincoln Castle
Lincoln Castle was built on a Roman hilltop site in 1068. Unusually, it has two mottes. It housed one of only four surviving copies of Magna Carta and served as a prison into the modern era.
Why it mattered
- Unusual two-motte plan
- Housed a copy of Magna Carta
Chronology (selected)
- 1068: Castle built by William
