Lincoln Castle

Lincoln Castle was built on a Roman hilltop site in 1068. Unusually, it has two mottes. It housed one of only four surviving copies of Magna Carta and served as a prison into the modern era.

Why it mattered

  • Unusual two-motte plan
  • Housed a copy of Magna Carta

Chronology (selected)

  • 1068: Castle built by William
  • 1141: Battle of Lincoln during the Anarchy
