Antioch

The Principality of Antioch was established by Bohemond of Taranto, a Norman lord, after the siege of Antioch during the First Crusade in 1098. It was the most "Norman" of the Crusader states, with a feudal structure transplanted directly from southern Italy. The principality survived until 1268.

Why it mattered

  • Norman-founded Crusader principality
  • Longest-lasting Norman polity in the Levant
  • Strategic control of northern Syria

Chronology (selected)

  • 1098: Bohemond seizes Antioch after long siege
  • 1119: Battle of Ager Sanguinis — Roger of Salerno killed
  • 1268: Baibars captures and destroys Antioch
