Anglo-Norman adventurers under Strongbow (Richard de Clare) captured Dublin in 1170, transforming the old Hiberno-Norse city into the center of English lordship in Ireland. Dublin Castle, built from 1204, became the administrative headquarters of the English colony for centuries.
